HOME GYM IDEAS
HOME GYM ESSENTIALS – GYM EQUIPMENT YOU’LL NEED
The home gym equipment you’ll need will depend on the types of exercise and workout routine you’ll practise.
You won’t need much equipment if you’re just starting general exercise. We suggest you start by acquiring some home gym essentials and add additional equipment as you need.
If you practise mainly yoga, pilates or general exercise, which don’t require extra equipment, read our yoga room ideas for inspiration.
Home gym essentials may include:
- One or two pieces of cardio equipment.
- Strength training tools, such as kettlebells, dumbbells, gym balls and resistance bands.
- An exercise or yoga mat.
- Bolsters and yoga props if you practise yoga.
- Meditation pillows and blankets for your meditation area.
HOME GYM DECOR – BRING THE OUTDOORS IN
Here at Noveme, we are strong advocates of biophilic design. The whole concept of our brand is to offer natural exercise equipment that provides a nature-like experience while exercising indoors. So, as you’d imagine, we couldn’t recommend any design approach that doesn’t embrace the natural world.
We believe your home gym should be one of your favourite rooms at the house and not just a functional, sterile space.
Your dedicated workout space could be the perfect room to take a break, wind down and relax.
Indoor spaces that connect us to nature are proven to boost productivity, stimulate creativity, encourage healing and reduce stress and anxiety.
There are many ways to embrace biophilic design concepts in your home gym. You can add indoor plants or opt for nature-inspired exercise equipment and organic colour palettes.
OPT FOR NATURE-INSPIRED EXERCISE EQUIPMENT
Nature-inspired exercise equipment is more aesthetically pleasing and can contribute to your physical and mental well-being.
Touching natural materials stimulates your senses and may even relax you. In fact, studies have shown that tactile stimulation by touching wood with the palm of your hands can relax you.
So ensure you opt for exercise equipment made of natural, organic materials, such as wood or cork.
ADD SOME GREENERY
When choosing plants for your home gym, it’s best to opt for those that have air-purifying properties, require minimal maintenance and enhance the aesthetics of your space. Remember that your home gym is a place for movement, so avoid plants with thorns.
If you’re designing a small home gym without much space for indoor potted plants, opt for green walls (walls of plants). These won’t take any floor space and offer all the benefits of adding greenery to your workout space.
INVITE NATURAL DAYLIGHT INTO THE GYM
Ideally, you want to set your home gym in a room with windows to create a light, bright and airy atmosphere that brings natural daylight into the space.
Natural light has many benefits to our mind, body and well-being, and it can be the difference between an uninspiring workout space and one you actually want to spend time in.
To increase natural light in your space, consider leaving your windows unadorned or choosing thin material for your curtains.
If you live somewhere with long, dark winters and a shortage of sunlight, or you don’t have an available room at your house with windows to convert into your home gym, you may benefit from LED lighting that mimics natural daylight.
HAVE FUN WITH MULTI-COLORED LIGHTING
Natural daylight has numerous benefits for your body and mind, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn't experiment with other types of lighting.
Add fun to your evening workout by experimenting with coloured lighting. You can opt for a single colour or synchronise the coloured lights with music. A way to experiment with lighting is to buy some colour-changing smart light bulbs, as most come with an accompanying app to easily switch colours.
ADD A MIRROR OR MIRRORED WALL
Adding a large mirror or mirrored wall to your home gym will help you observe form, alignment and posture while exercising and give you the illusion of a larger and brighter space. As mirrors reflect light into the room, they can double the amount of sunlight that enters the space.
CHOOSE AN EARTHY COLOUR PALETTE
An easy way to bring nature indoors is with colours. Opting for colour palettes that can be found in nature will take you back to the outside world.
Walls in soothing neutral tones will look great with your indoor plants and the earthy shades of your natural exercise equipment.
